MY DAILY 5 NEEDS HELP AND CHECK OUT MRS. THIGPEN

Okay, I don't know about you, but I try to change up my Daily 5 centers almost every day. I need more EASY ideas that can be at the tip of my fingers. Read to Self, Read to Someone and Listening Center are effortless and the kids know the drill. In my writing center they are usually writing in their journals or writing Thank You cards for our readers. Word Work- ugh. I love this center, but I am running out of fresh ideas that take about 10 minutes of independent work. They know my games, they know my centers, and worksheets are fine once in a while (eh hem, like today) but I don't have tons of interesting ideas on-hand, that the kids don't already know.
Any thoughts or links that you want to send to me, Bloggy World?
Here was our day in Daily 5- very calm. I need a little excitement!

They love using these phones to hear themselves  read.

Using our Long Vowel books from Lakeshore - this little guy is listening to Tiny Tiger

Today is Monday - Love Eric Carle!

We are trying really hard to write neatly on regular notebook paper vs. dotted line paper

What would I do without the Mailbox and their fun word family worksheets!?

I had to level my little readers today- so I needed that  1:1 time!

These posters are free in my store- download here

Have you entered this super easy giveaway, yet!? I'd LOVE to see some facebook posts!

And my darling friend, Nicki Thigpen is celebrating her much deserved 100 Follower Giveaway and there are some other GREAT bloggers that are contributing. Head over there asap- this girl rocks!

Happy Thursday and thanks for the help! I'm off to go see, The Book of Mormon! I am SO EXCITED!!!

  1. Okay, when I've had some time to think I'll try and make a meaningful comment, but for right now... I LOVE your shirt! You must tell me where you got it from! :)

  2. "Read-Build-Write" is a staple for my class. You can keep it fresh by adding new word cards or new word-building tools (letter beads, letter magnets, letter bottle caps, play-dough, etc.) I always keep sight words at that station, and then I add some thematic or seasonal words.

My kids can't get enough of the "I Spy" and "Write the Room" activities from A Differentiated Kindergarten. I also use her variation on "Read-Build-Write" with her letter bead centers with self-checking cards. Life savers!

One more that's always a hit is the Sight Word Power Towers and Sight Word Jenga from Teacher Tipster. I found a cheap Jenga set at a garage sale, but they also sell cheap generic versions at Target, Walmart, and most dollar stores.

  3. I love your cute Daily 5 posters! For word work, I use a lot of the task cards from Mrs. Mabe's pack. It's $5 on TpT, but it has TONS of great ideas for ways to write and practice words. Most of them don't require much set up like Rainbow Write, Pyramid writing etc., but some of more complicated for higher lever students. Here's the link: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Word-Work-Task-Cards-Recording-Sheets#

    Hope that helps.

    1. I also use Mrs. Mabe's task cards and my class loves them! I'll add in a read/write the room activity or a making words activity every other week or so, depending on our schedule. I also use word ladders with some of my higher kids--they love them!

  4. I know what you mean about trying to find new ways to do the same thing ---- and definitely something that fits in 10 minutes is not always easy. Uggghhh! We don't do Daily 5, but I am so interested in it and love reading more about it. If I find anything in my travels I'll let you know :)

  6. I am currently going through a Daily Five Face Lift and have been searching blogs all night to try to find the best ways to organize the choices!

I *currently* use Rachelle's pack called 1-2-3 Spell With Me for my word work center. The pack includes a lot of recording sheets, but the actual word work activity uses a variety of manipulatives. My students can read and write their spelling or sight words with pens (PENS!?!?!), markers, stamps, wiki sticks, slinkies, and old cell phones (the ones with the buttons). Here's the link if you want to check it out: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/123-Spell-with-Me

I would love to know how you organize your rotations, choices, and materials!

    1. I love that you're getting a Face Lift! My Daily 5 needs one, too! We do 8-10 minutes at each station and their clean up and transition is all signaled by various iPhone sounds. Unlike some, we actually do all 5 (sometimes 6) daily. Thanks for the tips!
